Airplane Crash in the First Due
Monday, August 19, 2019

On Sunday 08/18/2019 at around 0900hrs, Station 23, and numerous mutual aid companies were dispatched to Interstate 95 SB in the area of Churchmans Road in reference a small plane that had crashed into the woods. Squad and Deputy Chief 23 quickly responded.  Additional information was received that a small two engine plane had requested to land at the New Castle Airport, and apparently lost radio contact shortly after.  Based on the terrain of the area needing to be searched , additional resources were requested and a coordinated search began.

Approximately 20 minutes into the search , Deputy Chief 18 (Good Will) reported that he had located the plane upside down in a wooded area near the dispatched location. Crews began work to access the plane.  Units gained access into the plane and unfortunately located two deceased subjects.

Fire Department assets remained on the scene for approximately 7 hours supporting the investigation being completed by the Delaware State Police, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) , and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Deputy Chief 23 held the “Newport Command”.

The Minquas Fire Company would like to express our deepest gratitude to the individuals and agencies that assisted in any manor with the mitigation of this incident. There are too many agencies to thank individually , but without the help of our partners this operation would have been impossible.
