Saturday, August 29, 2015

On the above date, just after 0330hrs Station 23, along with Engine 17 (Five Points) New Castle County Paramedics, and Delaware State Police Aviation were alerted to the area of 225 East Justis Street in Newport for a reported Accident with a vehicle on fire with a patient trapped inside.  Ambulance, Rescue Engine 23 (with a crew of 4 under the command of Engine Captain Mills), and Fire Chief 23 (Dierolf) all arrived on the scene within 3 minutes of dispatch.  Crews quickly discovered that the vehicle was not on fire, but the operator was heavily entrapped inside.  The crew of Rescue Engine 23 quickly stabilized the vehicle and began extrication.  Crews worked to remove 2 doors, the "B" post, and displaced the dash to remove the driver.  The patient was extricated within 18 minutes of the arrival of the Rescue Engine.  The patient was transported to the parking lot of the Penial Church at the corner of Justis Street and Marshall street where they were loaded into Delaware State Police Trooper 4 and flown to the trauma center.  Rescue Engine 17 also assisted.  Great work to all units on the scene who operated flawlessly together.
